Ode

An ode is a poem that celebrates a person, event, or thing. It is written in a formal or emotional way, often showing deep admiration or praise. In ancient times, odes were meant to be sung, which is why they have such strong rhythm and feeling.

Example

Ode to Aphrodite

Deathless Aphrodite, throned in flowers,
Daughter of Zeus, O terrible enchantress,
With this sorrow, with this anguish, break my spirit
Lady, not longer!

Hear anew the voice! O hear and listen!
Come, as in that island dawn thou camest,
Billowing in thy yoked car to Sappho
Forth from thy father's
Golden house in pity!

- written by Sappho (c. 630–570 B.C.)

Odes can be serious or joyful, simple or grand. What matters most is that they express strong emotion — a deep appreciation for someone or something that inspires the poet.
