    (For Sue's 50th)

Far away, from a winter's storm, she finds refuge
On a tiny piece of earth, in the center of the sea,
    Where time passes slowly,
    And is never kept.

    Fragrant flowers, grow like giants,
Fed from the rich, dark red soil
Amid air so humid, they never thirst.

Soft sandy beaches surround the island,
Lovely, like a lei, of yellow flowers.

The thick moist air softens her skin.
Years melt away, under the warm
    Tropical sun.
    She is forever,
    Young.

The pull of the blue-green, ocean is hypnotic
. She slips into the warm, salty silty sea,
And the waves cradle her, like an infant,
    In a mother's gentle arms.

    Daffodil

    Daffodil
    Standing gracefully
    On your moist bed
    Sun reflecting
    On your golden head
    A joy of loveliness spreads
    Your long stems see
    How they jauntily sway
    From the breeze of today
    And yellow trumpet heads
    Looking bright and grand
Stems cut and in water stand
    A vision of loveliness

    Recollections

    The memories swim up unbidden;
    who knows what triggers them?

Today I recalled the day we
    left the ambulatory center
    walking arm in arm,
    the day before the surgery
    that would eventually kill her.

Smiling, she looked up at me,
and said, "I'm doing this for you,
because you want me to live longer."

And so I learned how, even when
you've loved and sweated and prayed
and done absolutely all you can,
    the worst can still happen,

and this is the reason we are
    prevented from knowing beforehand
    the details of our futures.
